Mat gently pulls my head towards his and plants a delicate kiss on my cheek, just out of range of where the bruise sits, like he knows.
"My hero," he whispers, smiling and pecking my cheek again. I wrap my arms around him, one behind his shoulder, other behind his neck, fingers getting caught in his ponytail. He rests his other hand on my back, in between my shoulder blades. We stand there in an embrace far longer than we usually do--I wear my usual indifferent face, focused on Mat's positive energy radiating from him and suddenly, he brings his hand from the side of my head down to my face, fingers landing on my lips.
"Why do you always have that scowl?" he asks, and he turns his head, his forehead now leaning on my temple. I can feel his eyelashes as he blinks. "Can you smile for me, Ez?"
At first I decide to play with him, deepening my scowl, which makes him smile wide. Then something hits me. There's suddenly a deep sadness that appears--he can't see you, but you can see him. He'll never truly know what you look like.
My fake deep scowl disappears into my regular one, and after a couple seconds of silence Mat's smile drops and his hand moves to my eyebrows, which are subconsciously furrowed. I close my eyes, suddenly wishing him away. You promised yourself you'd never get too close to anyone. Where'd that go?
"Ez," he whispers, and my arms fall back to my sides. He pulls away as well, though keeping a hand anchored on my face, immediately moving close to my again, closing his eyes and feeling around my face. He ends movement when his hands are cupping my jawline. "Ezra," he begins again, saying my full name this time, which triggers the opening of my eyes. "What's wrong?" he's opened his eyes, again, and they flicker around my invisible face, attempting to make eye contact.
"I shouldn't be here."
Confusion and curiosity consume his face.
"I once promised myself I'd never get close to anyone, and look where I am now."

ezra got into a bar fight after some guys tried to rob the place where mat works.
